Hollywood descended on the Lakes Region to film the 1981 movie On Golden Pond on Squam Lake.

Adapted from screenwriter Ernest Thompson’s 1979 play of the same name, the film tells the story of an aging couple who spend their summers at their vacation home on the shores of an idyllic lake. It starred father-daughter acting powerhouses Henry Fonda and Jane Fonda, along with the legendary Katharine Hepburn.

On Golden Pond highlighted the natural beauty of Squam Lake and showed the characters fishing, swimming and boating in the unspoiled environment. The film’s popularity brought widespread attention to the Lakes Region, resulting in an increased call for lakefront property, cottage rentals, boat access and narrated boat tours.
