A manhunt got under way Wednesday morning for a man accused of threatening and robbing a Northfield resident inside his home.

Police responded to 115 Zion Hill Road just before 9 a.m. for a report of a home invasion in which the suspect – a man described as 6-foot-4 and weighing approximately 250 pounds – had fled.

The witness told authorities the man knocked on his door asking for help, claiming his vehicle was out of gas. Once inside, the man began rummaging through items in the house, Northfield police Chief John Raffaelly said.

The intruder then reportedly told the victim to get on the floor or else he would shoot him.

“(The victim) was not hurt at all, but he was just ordered to lay on the floor,” Raffaelly said.

The intruder then grabbed a sneaker belonging to the victim and began undoing the laces, leading the victim to believe his hands were going to be tied together, police said. Instead, the man took out a duffle bag he had brought with him and began placing items from the residence – including a cellphone and laptop computer – inside, according to reports.

Lastly, police said, the suspect stole the victim’s car keys to a blue 2010 Nissan Altima and drove away from the crime scene in an unknown direction.

Northfield police issued a “be on the lookout” alert for the vehicle early Wednesday and asked for the assistance of neighboring law enforcement agencies – including Franklin police officers and Merrimack County sheriff deputies – in the search.

Police ask anyone with information about the incident to contact Sgt. Michael Hutchinson at 286-8982.
