Letter: Save the Bates building

Published: 3/15/2019 12:01:51 AM

Hopkinton’s town meeting will be held Saturday, at which time residents will have the opportunity to vote to keep the Bates building and have the town clerk/tax collector’s office restored to that location.

Space, security and lack of parking have all been issues at the present location at the town hall. The distance traveled by the town clerk to the bank and post office on a daily basis is also a negative factor with the office presently located at the town hall.

The Bates building has always served to suit all the needs for the past 20 years. Many folks are finding it difficult to do business at the town hall given the lack of parking and distance to walk to get to the town clerk’s office. To sell the Bates building could be an unfortunate mistake. The monetary benefit from selling the building would be minor after the cost of renovations to the town hall is realized.

I urge residents to attend Saturday’s meeting and vote to save the Bates building and to keep the gift that was so graciously given to our town. Thank you for considering this effort.
