Drivers who frequent Stickney Hill Road in Hopkinton will need to seek an alternative route for the indefinite future.

The bridge that carries Stickney Hill Road over Boutwell Mill Brook has been closed, the town announced Thursday. The bridge is among many listed on the state’s “red list,” which identifies bridges across New Hampshire in the most need of repair.

This bridge has been on the state’s bridge aid list for five years, but funding for that project is still not expected for several years, according to the town.

“Since the last inspection, the metal culvert has deteriorated greatly and more quickly than expected, so the state has ordered it closed,” reads the notice posted on the town website.

It is ultimately up to the town to decide what will be done with the bridge. The Department of Transportation inspects municipality-owned bridges every two years, said Tim Boodey of the DOT’s Bridge Maintenance Bureau.

It is not clear for how long the bridge will be closed, but town officials say they are working on an alternative solution.

“We are working on a temporary solution, but plan on the bridge being closed for a number of months. We will update you as more information is available. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
