Bless you, Katherine Solomon, for your Jan. 17 haiku on the misuse of “impact.” An ugly relative is “impacted,” spouted by politicians, bureaucrats and the reporters who ape them. When I became an editor and grammarian to young journalists, I passed on this bit of wisdom picked up as cub reporter from a city editor: “The next time you use ‘impacted,’ I will ask what was impacted – teeth or bowels?”
