A jury has awarded roughly $5 million to a Derry woman and her husband, who accused a Londonderry-based eye doctor of delaying treatment so long that she became legally blind.

The Telegraph reported Monday jurors awarded Nancy Knox compensation for losses that they say were caused by the negligent treatment of her right eye. Her husband received another $300,000.

The verdict followed a trial earlier this month.

Knox’s attorney, Rick Fradette, says Dr. Adam Beck diagnosed her with macular degeneration in her right eye.

Her lawsuit states that Beck delayed treatment and then used treatments that are risky for patients with a history of glaucoma. Knox’s condition deteriorated. Her right eye later had to be surgically removed.

Beck previously denied that he failed to provide adequate care.
