Letter: A ‘Banner’ idea about the anthem

Thursday, October 05, 2017

Perhaps it might be a good time to reconsider our militaristic and racist national anthem.

“The Star-Spangled Banner” salutes our first national war of aggression, was written by a slave-holder, takes pride in the deaths of escaped slaves fighting for England in that conflict, and to top it off, was put to a tune commonly sung by tavern drunks.

We can do better.

On second thought, the song might fittingly describe what we’ve become, after four decades of voodoo economics and the election of a despot.

“American the Beautiful” anyone?
