Letter: COVID-19 response shows us we have the power to change

The COVID-19 pandemic has spread around the world quickly, perhaps aided by the worsening climate crisis.

One reason for the spread of this virus, put forth by Harvard C-change, is the increasing number of livestock in close industrial systems, which makes the perfect breeding ground for novel diseases.

This increase in livestock can also account for the quicker spread of the virus. If one animal becomes infected, their close proximity will cause the virus to spread at an unprecedented rate. The effects of COVID-19 also show how much we could change if we do it right now. While cities are on lockdown and people cannot work, global air emissions have lowered dramatically. Videos of deer in subway stations once populated by hundreds of people have been circulating around the web. Animals returning to cities aren’t the only amazing differences in these recent months. In most Chinese cities constantly covered in toxic smog, the decreased emissions have cleared smog and people can see the full city skylines with surrounding mountains.

These changes are happening in just a few months. This shows that if the whole world comes together to fix climate change just like COVID-19, we can make a difference soon.
