Letter: Please end nastiness regarding teachers

It’s been insinuated on Facebook that Hopkinton School District teachers and staff are throwing away taxpayer-purchased supplies: reams of paper, white board markers, pencils.

Each summer, Staples runs weekly specials. Just to name a few: notebooks for $0.25, reams of wide-ruled paper $1, and a 4-pack Sharpie markers $5. Not only do I visit Staples weekly to take advantage of these specials, I visit Wal-mart or anywhere else that is running sales.

As a teacher at Hopkinton, while I ask families to purchase a supply list at the start of each year, I recognize that some families will not be able to. So I purchase supplies for them. When we do special projects in class and families cannot send in the supplies for their child, I purchase them myself. In the past I’ve also purchased Valentine’s Day cards for a child to give out, classroom snacks, plasticware for the never ending pudding and fruit cups, socks, Chapstick, cleaning supplies, etc. I really could go on and on about all the purchases I make out of pocket and it’s not just me, every teacher I know does this.

The suggestion that teachers would willingly, knowingly, throw away Hopkinton-taxpayer-purchased materials, when in actuality all of us spend hundreds of dollars of our own money on school supplies, is asinine and speaks to how divisive things have become in Hopkinton. I wish the nastiness would end and we could come together on this.
