A man who was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old relative was sentenced last week to 15 to 30 years in prison, according to prosecutors.

John Knott Jr., 63, was sentenced during an appearance at Carroll County Superior Court, according to a case summary. Prosecutors agreed to suspend five years of the sentence if Knott completes a sex offender program in prison.

Knott was found guilty of aggravated felonious sexual assault in October. Prosecutors accused him of assaulting the victim in 2017. The victim’s mother reported the assault to police a month later.

“This kind of crime has an irrevocable effect (on the victim),” Carroll County State’s Attorney Michaela Andruzzi told The Valley News. “He should have to live with the consequences.”

Knott has been ordered to have no contact with the victim and he must register as a sex offender for life once he leaves prison.

Knott’s attorney did not return requests for comment.
