Mass murder made easy

Second Amendment true-believers – gun nuts if you prefer plain English – repeat two things: “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people” and that privately owned guns are merely tools.

Perhaps they can tell us how many people would be dead and wounded at Stephen Paddock’s hands had he thrown hammers and screwdrivers out his hotel window or waded into the crowd with a belt sander or power drill. Are the questions absurd? Far less so than the two statements.

Yes, people kill. But guns with high-capacity magazines and rapid rate of fire make the job of mass murder far too easy. To say so is not to politicize horrible events. It is simply to expose two great lies in the hope that it will provide the inspiration to fight back against that absolutist minority. The truth will set us free, but we have to do the heavy lifting.
