Bauhan Publishing awarded a poetry prize to Desiree Alvarez and will publish her first full-length collection of poetry Devil’s Paintbrush.

Alvarez received the May Sarton New Hampshire Poetry Prize in honor of a Nelson poet, novelist, feminist and memoirist.

She is a poet as well as a visual artist who teaches at the New York City College of Technology, CUNY and the Juilliard School. She painted the image on the collection’s cover.

Devil’s Paintbrush is divided into five art-themed sections: Trompe L’oeil, Portraiture, Night Landscape, Figure-Ground Illusion and Illuminated.

The poems examine myth, history, bodies, relationships and their intersection.

University of New Hampshire Professor Mekeel McBride judged the award.
