Merrimack County Sheriff Scott Hilliard is accused of driving drunk Friday on Route 3 in Tilton.

Hilliard, 58, of Northfield faces a charge of aggravated driving while intoxicated, according to Tilton police Chief Robert Cormier.

A caller reported to police that a vehicle was driving erratically on Route 3, also known as Laconia Road. The caller followed the vehicle into the 99 Restaurant parking lot at 154 Laconia Road, where police officers responded and arrested Hilliard, Cormier said.

Hilliard was released on bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 26 in Franklin’s district court.

Police said Hilliard was not on duty at the time of of the incident.

In a statement, Hilliard’s attorney, Jared Bedrick of Douglas, Leonard & Garvey, P.C., said, “We have become aware of his arrest and understand that, consistent with his decades of law enforcement service, Mr. Hilliard was cooperative with police. Critical evidence remains unanalyzed and we will refrain from further comment until we have had the chance to review the allegations.”

Hilliard’s law enforcement career spans more than 30 years. He was first elected Merrimack County sheriff in 2006 after having served as chief of police in Northfield. He was re-elected sheriff for a seventh term in November after defeating his first primary challenger in 10 years. His term expires in 2020.

Bedrick declined to say Monday to discuss Hilliard’s employment status with the county.

County commissioners Tara Reardon, Bronwyn Asplund-Walsh and Peter Spaulding could not be reached for comment. County office manager Mel Harrison referred the Monitor to the sheriff’s department.
