Many inside the program believed Nate Nichols to be the fastest classic skier in the state. On Saturday he showed the rest of the competition why.

Nichols, a senior for the Concord Nordic team, went up against all four NHIAA divisions in the first New Hampshire Coaches Series Race at Whittaker Woods and emerged as the top overall finisher.

Nichols breezed through the 5K course in 14 minutes, 37.9 seconds and was the fastest among over 130 skiers competing to earn the Monitor Player of the Week Award.

“(Nate) has been coming on strong all year,” Concord Nordic coach Sam Evans-Brown said. “We knew he would be fast, but I don’t think anybody else knew how fast he was.”

The showing from Nichols helped the Tide to second place with 363 points. The skate race in the Coaches Series is scheduled for Feb. 17 at White Mountains.
