Letter: The politics of Bike Week

Why has Gov. Sununu not raised any concerns about Laconia hosting Motorcycle Week? This is going to take place from Aug. 22-30, a few weeks prior to schools opening.

Is it a political decision? Is commerce more important than community health? There are many organizations throughout New Hampshire that have canceled events that would have also been a financial benefit to their communities. They have decided that community health is a necessary priority.

Much has been written about COVID-19 and its transmission. Here’s one. The spread of COVID-19 is based on two factors: How dense the population is and how dense the population is. Motorcycle Week will bring many people into the state and especially into the communities around Laconia.

As one city council member said, “I hope we’re not sitting on a time bomb like the Sunbelt states.”
