A Manchester man is in serious condition after a motor vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 93 in Northfield.

Joseph Czaja, 60, remained at Concord Hospital as of Wednesday afternoon, said New Hampshire State Police Trooper Daniel Livingstone, who was investigating the crash. Police said they have not been able to interview Czaja as a result of his condition.

Czaja was driving a white work van southbound on I-93, just north of Exit 18, when he somehow lost control of the vehicle, causing it to leave the roadway, Livingstone said. The van came to rest on its side after crashing into a wooded area in the median, he said.

“We don’t know any more than that at this point,” Livingstone said. “It’s still under investigation.”

Czaja was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by first responders.

Several passers-by pulled over and tried to render aid to Czaja who was in medical distress, Livingstone said.

“No one actually witnessed what happened. They all got there right afterward,” he said.

The crash was reported at 4:44 p.m.

Police declined to release photos of the crash citing the ongoing investigation.
