Ryan McCormick hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth and UMass Boston rallied for a 5-4 victory over New England College in Game 1 of their best-of-three Super Regional series of the Division III NCAA Tournament in Boston.

The comeback spoiled a solid outing from NEC starting pitcher Nick Powers, who tossed all eight innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits, and dropped to 7-2 on the season.

Every starter recorded a hit for the Pilgrims (28-17). Xavier Nunez led the way, going 2-for-5 with a double, and Anderson Jimenez also added two hits.

NEC jumped on top with two runs in the first inning, but UMass Boston responded with three in the second before the Pilgrims seized the lead back with another two runs in the fifth.

The teams will tangle in Game 2 on Saturday at noon, with a potential Game 3 looming 45 minutes after the conclusion if NEC can extend the series against the Beacons (34-11).
