Letter: An offensive ‘Beetle Bailey’ cartoon

I am deeply saddened by the Monitor’s editorial decision to publish the Jan. 10 Beetle Bailey comic strip depicting the use of peace symbols for military target practice.

I am not a fan of this comic strip because of its frequent sexist content, but I am not generally in favor of censorship on the comics page and usually just ignore it.

However, I found today’s images arresting, sickening and certainly nothing to laugh at. At a time when the United States faces potential military crisis in the Middle East, and many men and women in uniform are at risk, I find the sentiment expressed an offense to the integrity of our military forces and to peace-seekers everywhere.
