Police in Bedford are looking for two people suspected of abandoning a golden retriever in poor health outside of an animal shelter. The dog had to be euthanized.

Bedford Police Chief John Bryfonski said an Animal Rescue League worker arrived Monday morning and found the dog lying in mulch near the building’s back door. The female dog, estimated to be about 10 to 12 years old, refused to eat or drink.

Bryfonski said following a veterinarian’s exam, the dog was euthanized due to “extensive” medical issues, many of which could be attributed to neglect over a long period of time.

Police determined that the dog was left outside of the shelter on Sunday night, without food or water for more than 12 hours.
