Lebanon police have opened an investigation into who is responsible for placing “racially charged” fliers under people’s car windshield wipers in the Upper Valley Plaza on Wednesday night.

At least two people called the police and reported that a flyer was placed on their vehicle, Lebanon Police Chief Richard Mello said Thursday.

Although the fliers are “distasteful,” Mello said, he doesn’t think — at this point in time — the person or people responsible committed a crime. He called the verbiage a “philosophy rooted in a racially charged manner.” Unless he receives information that the act was targeting a specific person in a threatening way, the fliers would be protected under the First Amendment, he said.

A copy of the flier shared by police argues that “Aryans,” or whites, are superior to other races, and says that “forced integration is deliberate and malicious genocide.” The pamphlet also prominently features the numbers 14 and 88, which white supremacists often use as cryptic references to Adolf Hitler.

Police are seeking surveillance footage to track down who placed the fliers, which also were found in the neighboring plaza where Ziggy’s Pizza is located.
