Question of the week: If you had the chance to spend eternity in a computer simulation, would you take it?

ONE OF THE MOST beloved episodes in the Netflix show Black Mirror is titled “San Junipero,” which is partly a love story and partly (spoiler alert) an exploration of (seriously, spoiler alert) a computer-generated afterlife. We won’t get too deep into how the fictional “San Junipero” works, but it’s essentially a virtual reality world that people can visit while alive and stay for eternity after death. Put simpler, it’s technology taken to the extreme: a copy of human consciousness uploaded to the cloud. That’s a lot to take in, especially if you haven’t seen the episode, but what we want to know is this: If you had the chance to spend eternity in a pleasant computer simulation after your physical body had reached its expiration date, would you do it? Email your response by noon on Tuesday, March 19, to letters@cmonitor.com. Please keep it between 150 and 400 words, and include an address and phone number for verification. We’ll run a selection in next Thursday’s Forum section.
