Letter: End ‘global gag rule’

Wednesday, April 25, 2018

It’s impossible to discuss comprehensive health care without addressing reproductive needs, including abortion.

A person should be able to decide if and when they have children, and having full, safe, legal and affordable access to all methods of contraception and reproductive options is paramount to that.

Outlawing abortion does not lower the number of abortions, rather it increases the number of unsafe abortions – leading to higher maternal mortality rates.

What’s more, Trump’s deadly “global gag rule” on abortion hamstrings efforts to seriously address the crisis of unsafe abortion throughout the developing world, contributing to the nearly 47,000 women who die every year from complications of unsafe abortion.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers, led by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and sponsored by others, including Sen. Maggie Hassan, have introduced the Global HER Act, which would permanently repeal the global gag rule and ensure clinics receive funding for family planning and reproductive health care, effectively reducing unwanted pregnancies and maternal mortality rates.

For the safety and welfare of women, girls and people across the world, we must demand the immediate repeal of Trump’s global gag rule and end the disgraceful attacks on women here and around the world.
