For most New Hampshire athletes, the beginning of fall sports means digging out football helmets, soccer cleats and field hockey sticks. But for Nordic skiing diehards yearning for the first snowfall of winter, a unique opportunity to strap on skis is coming to Warner.

The Rollins Roll roller ski race will be held at Rollins State Park at Mount Kearsarge on Sunday. The race is sponsored by New England Nordic Ski Assocation (NENSA) with assistance from the Kearsarge Regional High School Nordic ski team.

This roller ski race isn’t just a good opportunity – it’s the only competition of its kind being held in the Granite State this year.

This challenging five-kilometer race starts at the gatehouse and goes up the scenic auto road to the summit, an elevation of about 1,300 feet.

The Rollins Roll is the first race in a series of hillclimb races in the Allagash Brewing Masters Cup. Climb to the Castle up Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, N.Y., and the Mount Greylock Roller Ski Race in Adams, Mass., are also in the series.

The race begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday, with skiers starting in 15-second intervals. There will be prizes awarded to the top finishers in various age groups.

The 2021 edition of the Rollins Roll had around 30 competitors, according to Kevin Lee, the head coach of the Kearsarge Regional Nordic program, but up to 75 racers can be accommodated.

For more information and to register, visit skireg.com and nensa.net. A portion of the proceeds will go toward the Kearsarge Regional high school and middle school Nordic teams.
