Letter: Why I support Shaheen

This Republican, former Army Ranger and Green Beret supports re-electing Sen. Jeanne Shaheen to continue representing New Hampshire.

My service in the military took me to Central America, Scandinavia, Europe and the Middle East. I believe all my fellow veterans deserve quality health care. Sen. Shaheen continually has done what’s right on behalf of veterans.

As governor, she expanded the state Veterans Home. She championed legislation that prioritized veterans’ placement for job-training programs. She authored bipartisan legislation in D.C. that boosts small-business loans for veterans.

I first met then-Gov. Shaheen in 1996, when I served on the State Board of Education. I had been appointed by Gov. Steve Merrill. Most of my service, however, occurred under Gov. Shaheen. She made it clear she preferred to work with me despite our different political affiliations.

Sen. Shaheen has taken on both parties to support veterans. When Democrats reformed the VA, Sen. Shaheen ensured that New Hampshire veterans can pursue quality care outside the VA. When Democrats attempted to cut funding from the Veterans Choice program, Sen. Shaheen, along with then-Sen. Kelly Ayotte blocked it. I endorsed and worked for Sen. Ayotte no differently than I support and endorse Sen. Shaheen.

Sen. Shaheen’s service on the Armed Services Committee, as well as the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, demonstrate the respect she has among her peers.

I appreciate her dedication to New Hampshire’s veterans. We need more leaders like Sen. Shaheen. I am proud to endorse her re-election.
