“If we don’t learn to embrace small risks again, we will undoubtedly miss out on huge rewards.” Thomas Vicinanzo’s Feb. 25 letter about reopening Concord seems to ignore the fact that we are still very much in the midst of a global pandemic.
I share Thomas’s frustration and I too am weary from the restrictions of the past year. But COVID is in no way a “small risk” – 500,000 deaths in the U.S. alone was not the result of a “small risk.” Just ask anyone working on the front lines in hospitals. Ask people who’ve lost loved ones. Ask people who’ve had COVID and are still suffering from long-haul syndrome many months later.
We will still need to exercise caution to protect ourselves and our loved ones, especially the most vulnerable. We must be patient. And we must be grateful for those who are working to protect us.
