Letter: Sununu has proposed more than a budget

My son was 2 when I learned about New Hampshire’s developmental disability wait list. He is 19 now and the knowledge that his 21st birthday could mean placement on a wait list instead of receiving the services he needs to live a full, rewarding life has weighed heavily on me for nearly two decades.

What is the wait list? It is very simply a list of individuals who are 21 or older who need services, are legally required to receive services, but instead languish in limbo without those services until state funding comes through.

When Gov. Chris Sununu announced that his proposed budget will fully fund the developmentally disabled wait list for the entire biennium, families like mine around the state exhaled in relief.

Gov. Sununu clearly recognizes the terrible impact that underfunding or no funding for support for a person with a disability exacts on individuals like my son and their families. The governor has put forth more than just a budget – by fully funding the wait list, he’s championed services that will better the lives of people in the state who bring terrific value to our communities when they have the services they need and are among the most vulnerable Granite Staters when they do not.

I applaud Gov. Sununu for his leadership on this matter and ask the Legislature to follow suit.
