Letter: Democratic priorities

Dear Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez: The world faces two global existential crises. One, massive extinction of species due to human grabbing of the Earth’s resources, land and water; global warming; human pollution; and invasive species. Check it out in the United Nations’ sustainability program.

Two, the increased threat of nuclear proliferation and conflict.

We are failing in our response to the COVID-19 pandemic and are confronted with the global crisis of systemic racism to reinterpret our own and global history.

In recent solicitations for my support for the Democratic Party, you have asked me to choose an issue from a list that voters might consider most important.

My choice was not on your list: nuclear proliferation.

You also asked me to select from your list my choice for vice president. My choices for vice president were not on your list either: Barbara Lee and Oprah Winfrey.

My choice is based on their distinguished leadership in the areas of human rights and global consciousness. Barbara Lee is recognized as an experienced and excellent legislator. Oprah Winfrey’s support for Obama was deemed responsible for a million votes toward his election in 2008. Both are women of color.

The Democratic campaign must focus on articulating and working with the national and international communities on policy alternatives in a time of global existential crisis.

Not only as a deeply rooted principle, but especially in a time when we need to unify in solidarity, we must oppose demeaning language toward individual or nation.
