Three people are dead after their vehicle went off the side of Interstate 89 in New London and rolled over in the median.

State police said in a statement they were notified of a rollover Sunday about 11:29 a.m. The vehicle that crashed had been headed northbound on I-89, just north of Exit 12.

“Based upon the initial investigation, it appears that the vehicle involved in the crash was traveling northbound in the left lane of travel,” state police said. “Information was obtained that another vehicle may have merged into the left-hand lane in front of the vehicle involved in the crash. The vehicle involved in the crash subsequently swerved and lost control.”

All three occupants were ejected as the vehicle rolled over a number of times in the median.

Two of the people died at the scene. One was brought to New London Hospital where they later died due to their injuries, police said.

State police did not name the deceased pending notification of next of kin.

A portion of I-89 was closed for four hours while the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit, state police Troop D, the New London Police Department, the New London Fire Department, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation investigated the crash. During that time, traffic was diverted off Exit 12 and back onto the interstate.

State police said that impairment did not seem to be a factor, but that the crash remains under investigation.
