A Tilton man now faces a felony-level charge for allegedly setting a brush fire along the Winnipesaukee River Trail in Northfield this spring.

Alan Bushway, 18, was recently indicted by a Merrimack County grand jury on one count of attempted arson. He already faces six misdemeanor counts of arson, stemming from other brush fires set in the woods along the same Northfield trail between May 14 to July 19.

The fire marshal’s office said the May 14 fire resulted in damage to 0.3 acres of land and put residents of the area in danger. The fire was one of several brush fires that prompted a multi-agency response, to include the state’s fire protection bureau, the state’s probation and parole office and several police and fire departments in and around Northfield.

Bushway remains incarcerated at the Merrimack County jail in Boscawen, where he is being held on $12,000 cash-only bail.

As part of his bail conditions, Bushway is prohibited from having contact with the owners of the property where the fires were set.

The fire marshal’s office is asking anyone with information about the brush fires to contact investigator Matthew Wilmot at 223-4289.
