Letter: Paid family leave is about economic security

Recently, I attended the hearing on paid family and medical leave insurance. Sponsored by Sen. Dan Feltes, Senate Bill 1 received overwhelming positive testimony from hard-working families in New Hampshire who are struggling to get by, as well as by small businesses that incur these costs already but don’t have access to an affordable paid family and medical leave insurance policy.

I attended the hearing to testify on both my own personal experience and on the behalf of the volumes of families that I met while campaigning last year who expressed earnest support for paid family and medical leave. Given all of the support from hard-working Granite Staters, including N.H. small-business owners, I find it deeply troubling that opponents of this bill are trying to undermine the common sense of this bill by incorrectly stating that it’s an income tax sponsored by Sen. Feltes. This is entirely false and this kind of attack as a political strategy to undermine Sen. Feltes is unfair to thousands of hard-working Granite Staters who deserve to have access to tools to help them survive an unexpected health crisis.

Let’s keep our focus on what is really at stake here – the economic security of thousand of hard-working Granite Staters.
