Fire Chief Mark Tetreault is happy to announce that, Northwood Fire Rescue Department has been selected to receive a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The purpose of the grant is to provide critical resources to first responders to enhance operational efficiencies, foster interoperability and support community resilience.

Northwood Fire Rescue Department was awarded $230,810 to replace 26 obsolete self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and to replace an outdated breathing air compressor. This grant will address a critical need in the department. The new equipment will be equipped with new safety features to help to ensure the safety of our firefighters and will meet current national standards. A number of our knew air packs will be equipped with personal thermal imaging technology this will enable firefighters to see though smoke and this enable firefighters to more quickly locate victims in a fire situation.

The grant is a competitive grant with only about 1 in 3 applications awarded funding. Northwood assembled a grant team including Nikolas Bassett, Richard Bilodeau and Adam Schaub. Together they were able to craft a compelling and successful grant application. The last time Northwood received a grant from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program was 2004. Fire Chief Mark Tetreault expressed his appreciation to the grant writing team. “This grant will replace some very much needed equipment, it will better enable the fire department to accomplish our mission, to keep our community safe.”

Recently, David Parr from FEMA Region 1 attended the selectmen’s meeting to present a check to the town. This even was attended by a number of Northwood Firefighters; all 5 Northwood Selectmen; representatives of Sen. Jeanne Shaheen’s office and Rep. Annie Kuster’s office; Northwood Town Administrator; and several citizens of the community. Town Administrator Heather Thibodeau expressed her congratulations to the Fire Department and the Grant writing team.

“We are delighted that the outstanding work and dedication of the Fire Department team has resulted in this grant to the Northwood Community,” she said.

Both Shaheen and Kuster sent letters of congratulations that were read at the Selectmen’s meeting.
