Letter: Trump made the right call on Title X funding

Thursday, June 14, 2018

Unlike numerous recent letters and editorials in the Monitor, I rejoice in President Donald Trump’s decision to remove Title X funding from organizations that do abortions. This will allow other clinics and health care agencies access to these federal funds that were denied them in the past simply because they did not do or refer for abortions.

As Dr. Oge Young notes in his “My Turn” on June 10, there is a slight downturn over the last 10 years in the number of abortions done in this country (the majority done by Planned Parenthood, which receives almost half of all Title X funds), but this is not because of the greater availability of birth control, as he says, but because more and more people are recognizing the truth that abortion kills a real live human being.

It is also a fact that the thousands of community health centers, such as the one we have here in Concord, provide more comprehensive Title X health care services than Planned Parenthood offers. For example, a pregnant woman cannot receive an ultrasound at Planned Parenthood. So it’s not as if poor women will have nowhere to go with this move by President Trump.

It seems disingenuous to me when Planned Parenthood says that the millions in taxpayer money it gets under Title X does not pay for abortions – perhaps not directly. But, nevertheless, all that money buttresses up their organization. Other, less-controversial health care clinics need to get their share, too.
