Letter: Protect the world through vaccination

New Hampshire’s COVID vaccination program is picking up speed, giving hope that we may be able enjoy the summer. I was grateful to receive my first dose recently. Running vaccination clinics is a great role for the N.H. National Guard.

Yet until people around the globe get vaccinated, no one will be safe from COVID. Without worldwide vaccination, the virus will keep circulating and spinning off new variants.

If simple human decency is not enough, then the need to protect the U.S. population makes clear that pharmaceutical firms should distribute vaccines to poor countries. And it’s unconscionable for them to use patent walls to restrict vaccine production. After all, the U.S. government subsidized much of the research and testing.

The drug companies should instead share vaccine technology worldwide. Protecting the world’s people from COVID is a higher priority than corporate enrichment.
