Letter: Wazir for state rep

Wednesday, October 10, 2018

IBEW Local 490 endorses Safiya Wazir, candidate for state representative for Concord’s Ward 8, because she comes at the job with a firm understanding that people are not looking for a handout, but they sometimes need a hand up.

She has been working for families, young people and seniors in Concord, first as a Head Start volunteer, then as a member of the state Head Start policy council, and on the board of Community Action Program. She was also an outspoken advocate for all-day kindergarten leading up to the issue’s approval, a move that supports working families.

She understands that education, training and employment are keys to success for individuals and for our state.

Her strong belief in the power of education – from pre-K to the trades/apprenticeships and beyond – has been a driving force in her life and makes her a strong advocate for workforce development, a key to keeping young families in our community. She is committed to paid family leave and affordable health care, so no one is forced to decide between their job or supporting their family through a birth or illness.

Since Safiya began her campaign for Ward 8 representative, she has been reaching out to neighbors, community leaders, unions, business people, organizations and the people she will represent. I am confident that she will work hard for the people of Ward 8.

I urge the voters of Ward 8 to vote for Safiya Wazir for state representative in the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
