Each year, The Works Café grants $2,000 to one current, active employee as part of their Employee Tuition Assistance Program. The grant must be used as partial or full reimbursement for their post-secondary tuition and fees. The funds are awarded based on a holistic review of the applicant: both the applicant’s academic and professional commitments, personal character, contributions to The Works Café community, and a demonstrated financial need. This program aims to benefit any employee who invests in their post-secondary education.

The 2022 tuition assistance winner, Julia Sommer, graduated this spring from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in acting/directing. Sommer started at The Works just under three years ago and within six-months she became a shift supervisor.

“My supervisor training happened to coincide with my studying to become a director, and I quickly realized how well the skills I was learning at work would apply to the theater,” said Sommer in her scholarship application. “Perhaps the most important skill I gained was the ability to lead others and take control of the room when I needed to. So much of being a supervisor is being able to read a situation and make the right call to keep everything flowing smoothly, and the same goes for directing a show.”

Sommer will begin studying for her MFA this fall at Mary Baldwin University in Virginia – her degree will be in Shakespeare and Performance. By earning this year’s scholarship from The Works Café, she will be able to focus more on her studies and less on financial stress.

The purpose of this program is to offer additional financial support for employees of The Works Café who wish to pursue their education, professional development, and personal experience with the intent to better serve the environment, the community, and the globe.
