Letter: Lean, mean government machine

In her inaugural address Gov. Ayotte pledged to shrink state government. “We need to make sure that government is operating like a lean process in manufacturing, where waste is elongated at each stage in the process to produce better results,” she said.
This begs the question as to what waste and inefficiency she is going to eliminate that has not already been eliminated by former Gov. Sununu during his eight years in office alongside the Republican-controlled legislature and executive council. You would think that, with all their claims of fiscal conservatism and maintaining a small government, there would not be any waste left to cut.
Of course, Republicans need to do something to balance the budget since they are severely lowering revenue by eliminating the interest and dividend tax, reducing the business profits tax and expanding education vouchers. As a result, we can expect the needs of the people to be downshifted to cities and towns resulting in even greater increases in property taxes.
