A 35,000-pound, $89,000 excavator has been stolen from a lot alongside Route 140, police said.

Belmont Police said it received the report Wednesday after a mechanic sent to do on-site maintenance couldn’t find the black and yellow Volvo Excavator Model #EC 140 CL.

Because the key was not left in the excavator, police said it would have to have been removed by a heavy duty truck with a large trailer bed.

“The truck and trailer would have taken up a large portion of the travel lane,” police said.

Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area of Belmont Elementary School and saw an excavator being loaded in the past 48 hours to call Belmont officer Evan Boulanger at 267-8350.
