A 60-year-old hiker had to be carried off Mount Cardigan on Wednesday after summiting.

According to the New Hampshire Fish and Game, shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday, rescue crews responded to Mount Cardigan. The hiker was found about seven-tenths of a mile from AMC Cardigan Lodge on the Holt Trail.

Members of Alexandria Fire Department, Bristol Fire/EMS, AMC Cardigan Lodge and a conservation officer located the man and carried him to the parking lot of the lodge by 2:45 p.m.

A DHART medical helicopter eventually took him to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon for evaluation.

The stricken hiker was identified as Ed Goodreau of Lexington, Mass. He and his wife had reached the summit earlier in the day but near the end of the descent he suffered from an unidentified “medical condition” that kept him from completing.
