Hopkinton sophomore Maddy Lane continued her impressive championship season against her toughest competition yet, finishing fifth at Saturday’s New England Interscholastic Cross Country Championship at Wickham Park in Manchester, Conn.

Lane’s 5K time of 18 minutes, 22 seconds was the second best by a Granite State runner in the girls’ race. Bedford junior Mikita Barry, who beat Lane by less than four seconds at last weekend’s Meet of Champions, was the Granite State’s top finisher, taking third in 18:16.

Senior Brooke Strauss of Glastonbury, Conn., won the New England title in 17:46.

Lane, who was the fastest sophomore at Saturday’s race, led her Hawk teammates 13th as a team.

Champlain Valley Union, Vt., won the team title with 100 points, followed by Cumberland, R.I. (124), Hanover (154), Oyster River (182) and Glastonbury (191).

Hopkinton was the fourth-best New Hampshire team, scoring 394 points, just five behind 12th-place Pinkerton Academy.

Seniors Shaylee Murdough (82nd, 20:10), Reese Bove (173rd, 21:28), Amelia Walsh (193rd, 21:50) and Evelyn Hopper (249th, 24:34), freshman Maisie Emerson (128th, 20:45) and sophomore Lucy Beardmore (250th, 24:48) also ran well for Hopkinton.

Concord senior Shelly Smith (134th, 20:47) was the only other Capital Area runner to compete on the girls’ side.

On the boys’ side, Concord junior Josiah Conley (15th, 15:53), Hillsboro-Deering sophomore Elijah Bodanza (61st, 16:40), Concord freshman Spencer Clemans (100th, 16:57) and Kearsarge senior Daniel Dalbec (150th, 17:33) were the area runners.

Soheib Dissa, a senior runner for Newtown, Conn., won the boys’ individual title in 15:13, just one second ahead of Marshall Vernon of LaSalle Academy (R.I.).

Ridgefield, Conn. (63), East Lyme, Conn. (161), Bishop Hendricken, R.I. (196), Pinkerton Academy (221),  St. Johnsbury, Vt. (225) and Bishop Guertin (234) were the top six teams.
