An 80-year-old Northwood woman died Friday morning after the car she was driving on Route 4 hit a truck that was backing up into a driveway.

This is the fifth fatality along Route 4 in Chchester, Epsom and Northwood over the past three years. The road is notorious for accidents – 63 of them last year – because of blind spots, merging lanes, passing lanes and highway-like speeds in the midst of rows of businesses and houses that have curb cuts.

According to Northwood Police, the crash happened about 6:30 a.m. on Friday.

“A 2016 Western Star box truck was traveling westbound when it came to a stop and began backing up into a driveway on the southern side of the roadway. A 1999 Ford Taurus was also traveling westbound and ... the Ford Taurus crashed into the passenger side of the truck ... which was almost perpendicular in the roadway,” police wrote in a press release.

“The operator of the box truck was identified as Cary McKay, age 55, of Gorham, Maine. He did not sustain any injuries. The operator of the Ford Taurus was identified as Marlene Bateman, age 80, of Northwood, N.H. Bateman sustained fatal injuries as a result of this crash.”

Police said there was a passenger in the box truck who did not sustain any injuries.

The speed limit at the accident scene was 45 mph.

“At this time it does not appear that speed or alcohol were factors, however all aspects remain under investigation,” police wrote. Anyone who witnessed this collision is encouraged to contact Trooper Petros Lazos by email at Petros.Lazos@dos.nh.gov or by calling 603-227-0047.

Route 4 was closed in both directions for approximately 4 ½ hours.

As of last month, New Hampshire has seen 94 fatalities related to wrecks on roads and highways.
