The LensCrafters store has moved out of the Steeplegate Mall, another blow to the Concord area’s biggest indoor retail site.

The eyeglasses store has moved nearby to a building at 240 Loudon Road next to Starbucks, and announced its reopening this week.

Steeplegate Mall struggled to keep tenets even before COVID-19 hit, part of a national trend that has hit many mid-sized malls; only JCPenney remains in a traditional anchor store slot.

The mall, opened in 1990, has worked to transition away from depending on retail with such occupants as Hatbox Theatre and The Zoo Health Club, but the change has not always gone smoothly. Its most unusual tenant, Capital City Charter School, moved into space formerly occupied by another anchor tenant, Bon Ton, but the space is vacant again after the school was shut by the state last year because of financial problems.

The closed Sears store, once the third anchor tenant, is now being used as one of the state’s COVID vaccination sites.
