What fools were we? We made difficult choices, sacrificed, saved and sent our two children to good, high value colleges and universities. They both got educations that allowed them to get jobs and have career opportunities. As part of that planning, they both graduated with zero student loans.
It wasnโt easy, but they were my responsibility. That left our costs to about $100,000 per child (roughly $25,000 each per year). By todayโs standards, thatโs pretty good.
Now Sen. Elizabeth Warren wants to cancel all student debt. On top of that, she doesnโt want that debt relief to be considered income for tax purposes. That makes it literally โfreeโ money. How could I have been so stupid to pay for my own childrenโs college educations, make sacrifices and choices along the way to do that, only to have those who borrowed their way through to be given a free pass?
The Democrats are currently โfloodingโ Americans with short term cash. Be very cautious of thinking youโre getting something for nothing. For example, how long will it take for your $1,400 check to get eaten up just with the increase in gasoline prices alone? The answer is โ not long. Their solution to this is permanent stimulus, free money, guaranteed income, education, housing and healthcare. As Mike Huckabee once said: If you think things are expensive now, just wait till theyโre free.
