Letter: For the People Act doesn’t threaten FITN

Gov. Sununu and Secretary of State Gardner, I am writing because I strongly disagree with your comments on the H.R. 1 and S. 1 For the People Act, which is currently before the U.S. Senate. Your statements that this act will endanger New Hampshire’s first in the nation presidential primary make no sense. Most people in this country realize that the For the People Act is one of the biggest democracy reforms we have had since the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

It sets standards that state legislatures must follow to ensure that no one has their vote stolen by those intent on setting up barriers to vote. Under the For the People Act, dark money groups will be required to disclose who is paying for those deceptive TV ads. It makes our elections safe and assures that all eligible Americans are allowed to vote. What the act does not do is lose the FITN primary for New Hampshire. We must speak out against the current anti-voter bills which are before the New Hampshire House and Senate. These bills are the ones that will damage our fine reputation for fair and open elections here in New Hampshire and will threaten our first in the nation status.
