Letter: Dueling doctors

Recently, Sen. Rand Paul has been confronting and challenging the integrity of Dr. Anthony Fauci. What I find interesting is that they’re both MDs. Dr. Paul was in private practice as an ophthalmologist in Bowling Green, Kentucky until he went to the senate in 2010. Dr. Fauci has been at the NIH as a researcher and clinician for over 50 years. The public wants their physicians to be board certified in their specialties which requires repeat testing at least every 10 years. Both men were initially certified and Fauci has remained so.

In 2005, Dr. Paul didn’t renew his certification with the American Board of Ophthalmology and for last six years had on his office wall a certificate from the National Board of Ophthalmology. So what? It turns out the National Board of Ophthalmology was his own creation with his wife and father-in-law as board officers. This was discovered when he first ran for the senate. His explanation was he wasn’t happy with board’s testing requirements, so he started his own. $500 to Dr. Paul and you could be certified too. The National Board of Ophthalmology dissolved when he became senator. His patients weren’t informed of this self-certification. A few complained, but he was still elected and re-elected. So when he challenges the integrity of Dr. Fauci, I think of Sen. Paul as a proven phony who lives in a glass house. Hopefully the stones now being tossed by Sen. Paul and his followers will land in the correct place.
