Letter: Pro choice is pro life

The reason lies in illegal abortion’s terror for women. I have a need to convey a 1968 experience at this political time. I shorten the story but the astute can complete the gaps. A student in my dorm was headed to NYC alone for an illegal abortion. The BMOC (acronym of the times: big man on campus) would provide the $300 but not moral support. This is a year or so before NY made abortion legal, causing women to fly in from all across the country. Many did not have the resources to do so, however.

I felt little choice because of my concern for her safety. There are no easy routes to Harlem from Durham without a car. We arrived at the address, a doctor’s office with waiting room full. Once the patients cleared, a man entered, curtains were drawn, and my friend was called back. The man who entered performed the procedure and tried to raise the price, which only made her cry. That evening, our trip involved taxis, trains and bus with her stretched out on the seats. Please realize how tragic this trip could have been, because many were just that.
