Letter: Support the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act

As a member of the League of Conservation Voters in New Hampshire, I strongly urge Sens. Shaheen and Hassan and Reps. Kuster and Pappas to sign on as co-sponsors of the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act. The United States is the largest producer of plastic waste in the world. It is past time for federal action on plastic pollution. Climate change and plastic pollution go hand-in-hand, as the production and disposal of single-use plastic products is fossil fuel intensive.

If we’re going to combat climate change, we have to deal with our nation’s dependence on fossil-fuel based plastics. The Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act would provide investments in domestic recycling and composting infrastructure, place a temporary pause on the expansion of plastic production in the U.S., ban several single-use non-recyclable plastic products, and mandate that plastic producers fund recycling programs. These are all good solutions for combatting the plastic pollution crisis that is wreaking havoc on our ecosystems, our oceans and our health. If you have any doubts that plastic pollution is a problem, just Google “Great Pacific Garbage Patch.”
