There are so many issues that this country (and the world) are dealing with, like climate change, COVID pandemic, immigration, economic inequality, rise of fascism and white superiority, but the most important is protecting our democratic right to vote because without this, we cannot address any of these other issues. 19 states have passed laws to not only restrict voting rights but to also give power to state legislatures to overturn the election results. We only have one more year before the midterm election and if the Democrats lose control of congress they will not have another chance to enact voting rights legislation.
From Salon, โWe are already in a constitutional crisis. The destruction of democracy might not come until November 2024, but critical steps in that direction are happening now. In a little more than a year, it may become impossible to pass legislation to protect the electoral process in 2024.โ As we have seen with the defeat of The Freedom To Vote Act, there will be no support from Republicans to support any future voting rights legislation. It is up to the Democrats but the only way is to remove the filibuster. Because of the filibuster, majority rule no longer exists in the United States Senate and it is being used to block important reforms like voting rights and limiting the power of money in politics. Is there anything more important to our democracy then voting rights?
