Letter: Protect abortion access in New Hampshire

Living in New Hampshire, abortion access and my ability to make personal, reproductive decisions have been restricted for the first time in modern history since Gov. Sununu signed New Hampshire’s first abortion ban.

Now, the end of Roe v. Wade is coming and the Court is giving state politicians the power to decide reproductive rights. While abortion will remain safe and legal in New Hampshire before 24-weeks, the political path makes clear we must elect lawmakers who will protect and expand access to abortion, no matter what.

The majority of Granite Staters don’t want to see Roe overturned; In solidarity, we must come together as a united front. This year, brave storytellers spoke out against Sununu’s abortion ban and successfully fought to add a critical exception for fatal fetal diagnoses to the 24-week ban. Because of their action and advocacy, HB 1609 is now law – meaning families in complex circumstances later in pregnancy once again have options.

New Hampshire patients and providers successfully advocated for repeal of the abortion care ultrasound mandate that was part of Sununu’s abortion ban.

While these victories are worth celebrating, these anti-healthcare laws shouldn’t have been adopted in the first place. Now is the time to continue to take action – to be there for our community, to stay informed, and to vote in November. I urge you to volunteer or donate to your local abortion provider, like Planned Parenthood of Northern New England and Equality Health Center.
