A lot of people are blaming Nancy Pelosi for causing China to threaten Taiwan with military force. I believe China was looking for an excuse to do this and that it was inevitable on China’s part. China sees Taiwan as a historical part of mainland China. China also sees the West’s support of Taiwan as part of historical conflict between East and West, related to the West’s domination of China in the past. This needs to be rectified in their view.

It seems inevitable to me that China will invade Taiwan. They cannot tolerate the status quo and they have the military to conquer Taiwan. The bigger question is what the United State will do. Do we want a war with China? Are we prepared to send U.S. soldiers to defend Taiwan? Or are we going to supply Taiwan with weapons to defend itself similar to what we are doing in Ukraine? The message from Washington seems to indicate that we will do both. A war with China would be a disaster for us, for Taiwan and for the world. We need to think more about how this plays out and we need a franker discussion of what we are willing and not willing to do in the event of a full-scale China invasion of Taiwan. Aircraft carriers are a great symbol, but in the age of missiles, they’re easy targets.
