IRS will not target the wealthy

I think it is cute that Lynn Chong in her letter to the Monitor (Sept. 4) thinks that the Democrats new IRS agents are going after the super wealthy. The wealthy can afford an army of tax attorneys to minimize and avoid taxes. In the real world when these new IRS agents are forced to meet collection quotas they are not going to fight it out with tax attorneys. They are going after regular working folks.

The Republicans tried to add a clause to the Democrats’ spending bill to limit audits to individuals that make greater than $400,000 a year but the Democrats voted it down. The Democrats voted it down because they know the only way to pay for reckless spending is on the backs of regular workers. So now carpenters, electricians and plumbers get to pay more taxes so that a doctor can get a tax rebate on their brand new Tesla. So next year or the year after when that audit notice arrives in the mail make sure to thank a Democrat.
